Product Development Intern (Summer 2025)

We are seeking a Product Development & Innovation Intern based in Elgin, IL (Northwest of Chicago) to support our newly formed Innovation Hub team to focus on bringing emerging technologies, products, and solutions to life through co-creation with external partners, creation of functional industrial prototypes, and working with early adopter customers to validate solutions. 

 

The team will leverage HARTING’s long standing reputation and expertise as a leader in connectivity to understand, anticipate, and address our customer’s needs. Our creative Technologists will incubate ideas and accelerate new product development across all of our existing and potential markets. Our Hub in Berkeley, CA focuses on e-mobility, semiconductor, data centers, and energy storage. Our Hub in in Cambridge, MA focuses on robotics, machinery, and transportation.  

 

HARTING's Intern Development Program (Summer 2025) consists of full-time, paid, and on-site internships. Our internships are an opportunity to work on hands-on projects with your team, to work cross-functionally with other departments, and gain exposure to the technical aspects of our company. Please note: we do not provide housing in Illinois. 

For technical intern roles, pay ranges from $22-25 per hour, commensurate with student's class standing and experience.
 

You will have the opportunity to be exposed to the following:

  • Operate with a startup mentality in terms of speed to market, focus on rapid prototyping and testing, and working with early adopter customers to validate market potential
  • Develop your skillset in the new product development process alongside our strategic stakeholders, research institutions, and other companies to formulate new productions, applications, and services
  • Utilize CAD software to create and/or modify 3D models, assemblies, and drawings
  • Design connector components to be 3D printed and test part designs
  • Be receptive to feedback and insight from teammates for future iterations of design
  • Conduct material research, and research additive and new manufacturing technologies
  • Provide review of all technical specifications and drawings
  • Provide support for New Product Introductions (NPI)
  • Collaborate with colleagues across engineering to identify and troubleshoot customer designs.

 

Skills and experience to thrive in this role:

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electric, Electro-mechanical preferred)
  • Experience with 3D CAD Software (Siemens NX preferred)
  • Experience with prototyping and fabrication and virtual team projects
  • Driven by an entrepreneurial spirit
