The Manufacturing Documentation Engineer creates, maintains, controls, and continuously improves technical documentation supporting manufacturing operations. The role works directly with Manufacturing Engineering, Production, Quality, Maintenance, Automation, technicians, and operators to convert technical knowledge and shop-floor processes into clear, standardized, and easy-to-follow work instructions, procedures, and records. A key responsibility is ensuring manufacturing documentation is accurate, properly approved, revision-controlled, readily available at the point of use, and updated when processes, equipment, or requirements change.
To succeed in this role, you will be highly driven to:
•Create, maintain, and revise manufacturing work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs), setup instructions, process guides, troubleshooting guides, checklists, forms, and related technical documentation.
• Observe manufacturing processes directly on the shop floor and work with engineers, technicians, operators, supervisors, and other subject-matter experts to capture the actual process and translate technical knowledge into clear instructions.
• Create practical visual instructions using photographs, diagrams, screenshots, tables, drawings, and other technical information to improve usability for production and technical personnel.
• Maintain document revision control, revision history, approval status, release status, distribution, and archival; ensure obsolete or superseded versions are removed from active use or clearly controlled.
• Ensure current approved documentation is available at the point of use and maintain consistent document naming, numbering, templates, formatting, and storage conventions.
• Maintain and organize manufacturing and engineering records such as equipment manuals, technical drawings, machine and tooling documentation, preventive-maintenance instructions, troubleshooting guides, training materials, and engineering standards.
• Review existing documentation for accuracy, completeness, usability, and alignment with the current manufacturing process; identify missing, outdated, duplicate, or conflicting documents and coordinate corrections with the responsible subject-matter expert.
• Perform periodic documentation audits and shop-floor checks, track identified gaps or corrective actions to closure, and support retrieval of controlled documentation for internal or external audits.
• Support new machines, tooling, automation, process changes, continuous-improvement activities, and production transfers by creating or updating required manufacturing documentation before production release.
• Partner with process owners to standardize documentation across Manufacturing Engineering and support operator and technician training or onboarding materials when documentation changes.
• Maintain effective electronic document repositories and support document-change workflows using company-approved systems such as Microsoft SharePoint or other document-management platforms.
• Drive documentation tasks to completion while ensuring technical process content is reviewed and approved by the appropriate Engineer, Quality representative, Technician, or designated subject-matter expert.
Skills and experience to thrive in this role:
• Engineering Degree or similar background
• 2+ years of experience in manufacturing, technical documentation, document control, engineering support, production, maintenance, quality, or a related technical environment preferred.
• Experience creating or maintaining work instructions, SOPs, technical procedures, process documentation, or training materials strongly preferred.
• Working knowledge of revision control, document lifecycle practices, controlled-document repositories, and change/approval workflows.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint or comparable document-management systems.
• Ability to understand manufacturing processes, equipment, technical drawings, manuals, and other production-related technical information.
• Experience in injection molding, automated assembly, industrial automation, maintenance, or other discrete manufacturing environments is a plus.
• Equivalent relevant experience and demonstrated expertise may substitute for preferred education.
